greyqueen / grimoire
a small inventory of vanishing things
this is a sample grimoire entry, written to explore the shape of the site.
the first thing to disappear was a photograph. not the photograph itself, perhaps, but the address where it had lived. a bookmark led to an empty page, and an empty page offered no explanation.
i remembered a doorway, a pale wall, a shape of afternoon light. i could not remember who had taken it.
what a copy cannot hold
saving a file preserves some things very well. the arrangement of pixels. the duration of a voice. the words in their original order.
other things need a note beside them:
- where the piece was found
- who made it, when that is known
- what surrounded it
- why someone thought to keep it
without that small act of description, an archive can become a room full of objects whose names have fallen off.
keeping the uncertainty
there is no need to invent what we cannot recover. an unknown date can remain unknown. a missing name should remain a visible absence, rather than an invitation to guess.
perhaps preservation begins there: with care for the thing itself, and honesty about the limits of our care.
i still look for the photograph. meanwhile, i have written down the doorway.
